- How can I find out about my obligations and rights as a tenant?
- When is rent due, and how can I pay?
Rent is due on or before the 1st of every month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, your rent should be submitted to our office on the last preceding business day. Equitex accepts cash, cheques and money orders for rent payment. We do not accept debit, credit or online banking transactions. We do not have automatic withdrawal available. If you have further questions about your rent, please contact our office.
- What is included in my rent?
Each tenancy is unique. Some tenancies have select utilities or parking included with the rent, some do not. Review your Residential Tenancy Agreement or contact your property manager.
- Who can tenants contact in case of an after-hours emergency?
Equitex is available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 250-386-6071. In the event of an after-hours emergency, an Equitex maintenance staff member will be available to assist you. If you feel that your safety is in jeopardy, contact police, fire or ambulance prior to calling Equitex. If you suspect a gas leak, contact Fortis BC at 1-800-663-9911 prior to calling Equitex.
- Do you have pet-friendly rentals?
Pet policies vary by landlord (some are strict on no pets, others restrict the number or weight of pets), and this information is included in our rental listings where applicable.
- I moved in to a new residence, and am receiving mail for a previous tenant. What should I do with it?
You should never open mail that is not addressed to you, even if it seems like junk mail. You can bring mail in to our office and we will handle it from there, or you can write ‘RETURN TO SENDER – MOVED’ on the front of each piece of mail and put it into a Canada Post mailbox. If you have any questions about returning mail, contact our office.
- I am a first time renter/I am renting for the first time. Where can I learn about being a renter?
Available from the Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre (TRAC), an online course called Renting it Right. TRAC is a non-profit organization that provides legal education to renters across BC, with the goal of helping them achieve successful tenancies. The course is available for free at www.rentingitright.ca and on TRAC’s website, www.tenants.bc.ca.
